Pastor in Chains After Being Taken “for Questioning”
India
Pastor Sawan leads a church in western India. During a service, police entered the church building with members of the radical Hindu group Bajrang Dal, removing Pastor Sawan and an elder of the church “for questioning.” When the two men were not released, other members of the church, including Pastor Sawan’s wife and son, went to the police station and were also detained. Most remained in jail for a month. Six were released, but Pastor Sawan remained because a member of the Bajrang Dal falsely claimed that the pastor had tried to convert him and threatened his life. When Pastor Sawan became sick in prison, he was transferred to a government hospital for a week and chained to his bed. All families involved have faced enormous legal costs and increased pressure from the arrests.
